Our Mission

Caring for community by promoting dignity and autonomy.

Migrant Support Collective is dedicated to supporting the well-being of migrants detained in the United States. By advocating for the rights of those impacted by the immigration detention system, we strive towards a future of collective liberation, where all individuals are treated with dignity and respect.

“The truth is, no one of us can be free until everybody is free.”

Maya Angelou

We envision...

A world where everyone fully actualizes their human rights and lives free from the injustices of detention.

We believe...

In a future where every person can live with dignity, freedom, and the opportunity to pursue their dreams.

A liberated world...

Has no jails that strip away human rights and autonomy, ensuring that all people are treated with respect and have the chance to thrive.

Our Core Values

Self-determination

All people have the right to live a rich and full life that aligns with their own interests, values, and identities. In immigration detention, individuals’ rights to self-determination is disrespected by a system that strips them of their personal autonomy.

Although it is a small act, providing a person in immigration detention with a book, a phone call, or a written letter can make a big difference.

Community Care

People in immigration detention are isolated from their communities. Facilities frequently lack basic services such as mental healthcare, access to phone calls to family and friends, and library materials.

By providing access to these services for people in immigration detention, Migrant Support Collective is taking care of our community where the government is not.

Collective Liberation

Migrant Support Collective was started by a small group of immigration legal aid workers who saw firsthand the ripple effects that the trauma enacted by the immigration detention system has on communities.

When even one person is deprived of their basic rights, all people are affected. Many small acts of kindness are necessary on the way to larger societal changes.
